We Want Our Pea Back

Spring is here! It may not feel like it yet, but it is.

To kick off spring in style, check out Susanna Leonard Hill's newest contest: March Madness.
The contest is to write a children's story that is 400 words or less and is a fractured fairy tale.

This was so much fun to write. Not only is it a fractured fairy tale, it is also a spoof of a book you might recognize.

Enjoy and happy Spring!

My superb sketching skills… or not. :)
We Want Our Pea Back
by Sarah Maynard

Our third pea is gone.
We want it back.

“Have you seen our pea?” said the peas.
“No, I haven’t seen your pea,” said the maiden.
“Ok, thank you anyway.”

“Have you seen our pea?” said the peas.
“No peas here.” said the frog.
“Ok, thanks anyway.”

“Have you seen our pea?” said the peas.
“No, of course not!
I haven’t seen any peas or anything else.
All I want to see is a comfortable bed.
But the one I was given has something small and round somewhere.
Don’t ask me anymore questions,” said the Princess.
“Okay. Thanks anyway.”

“Have you seen our pea?” said the peas.
“No, I’ve only seen orange vegetables,” said the boy.
“Did you eat them?”
“Yes, I did.”

“Have you seen our pea?” said the peas.
“I saw one once. It was round and blue,” said the sparrow.
“That’s not our pea, that’s a blueberry. Thanks anyway.”

“Have you seen our pea?” said the peas.
“What is a pea?” said the cat.
“Thank you anyway.”

“Nobody has seen our pea.
What if we roll out of our pod?
What if we are never snug again?
Our poor pea.
We miss it.”

“What’s the matter?” said the Prince.
“We’ve lost our pea. And nobody has seen it.”
“What does your pea look like?”
“It is small and round and…”

“SOMEONE HAS FELT OUR PEA!”

[The peas race to the Princess’s bed. They topple the mattresses and the third pea joins the pod.]

“Did you see who moved the pea?” said the Queen.
“No. Why are you asking us?
It’s just us.
Three in a pod as usual.
Don’t ask us anymore questions.” said the peas.
“Ok. Thank you anyway.”

“We love our pea.”

    1. Thanks Laura! Now I wonder what the pea in the bed is doing all this time. Maybe he's loving it and quite upset his pod buddies showed up. :)
