Since my thoughts on the day quite lengthy, I’m breaking up the day into 3 (ok maybe 4) chunks for easier digesting.
The summary continues with Part Three:
Let me start first by saying:
IF YOU CAN GET AN IN-PERSON CRITIQUE…DO
IT!!

A note from my critique Don't Give the Story Away in the Title |
I am so glad that I signed up for one and
I was able to talk with the wonderful Alyson Heller, Associate Editor at
Aladdin, Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing.
I have heard stories about people being
so nervous before one of these. And of course it’s hard not to dream the “she
is going to love this story and ask to buy it on the spot, even though that
NEVER happens, I am such an amazing writer that this time it will!” Please tell
me I’m not the only one thinking that. I’m not right??
Truthfully, I went into the critique
reminding myself that this business is AMAZINGLY subjective and that hers is
only one person’s opinion. But one that I added a bit more weight to, if we are
being truly honest. An industry professional’s opinion does weigh more on us
then others. That being said, I tried to remember I didn’t have to agree with
everything she said.
Except this time, I did.
The way she explained her thoughts to me,
I finally am able to raise my story leaps and bounds above where it was. This
one 15-minute session is going to elevate my story to a new exciting level. I
can’t wait to get to work on it actually.
Is that normal? I have no idea seeing as
I have only had one. I'm guessing not. But I definitely recommend taking the option if it is
available to you. So little to lose and SO SO much to gain.
Look tomorrow for my summary wrap-up including a great Twitter tip, the last few minutes of Lesléa Newman’s afternoon session and the faculty panel. Oh and a little poem by me. You don’t want to miss that.
